Learner 2.0: MySpace Generation Students

Tuesday the 29th of January I watched a webinar about all the ways to incorporate the technology many students are now using into the classroom. Chris O'Neal was the presenter and he talked about some ways to incorporate the technology that today's youth is frequenting. One way is youtube video's, students comment and post videos and interact with each other in a new way through youtube. Another interesting thing I picked up was that school's should not block wikipedia. Wikipedia is the #1 used free online reference site with almost 5.3 million entries. Most students today have incorporated technology into all aspects of their lives. Some of the most popular sites for the youth of today include MySpace and facebook. Now many wonder what good could come out of these sites. Well, here are a few skills students gain when they use these sites: writing, creating, producing, collaborating, communicating, reading, decision making, and socializing. These are all great skills for students to pick up.
Web 2.0 means an internet that is more: customizable, interactive, user-centric, controllable, mobile, and socially motivated. Some web 2.0 tools include: wikis, blogs, video and audio podcasts, twittering, and ning (which is basically a myspace for grown ups).
This webinar will impact my teaching because it has shown me many great sites and sources to utilize in the classroom. Also it has taught me to get rid of some of the old traditional ways of using computer time as a reward for doing well in lecture. Students learn in all different types of ways and teachers need to utilize every resource they can. This was an interesting and informational webinar and I look forward to learning more about the information I gained in the future.

I use technology everyday in my life. I use a cell phone to text message and make calls. I also use the internet everyday to do homework and also to play games and communicate with friends. Technology is a big part of my life and I am looking forward to learning more about ways to use it in my everyday life.
